Range Rover has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, arriving a year later than initially planned. This marks a significant step for the brand, offering a more environmentally friendly option for fans of large British SUVs who are concerned about the climate crisis. The electric Range Rover will be manufactured in Solihull, a town that has been the home of the brand since 1970. Priced starting at £154,070, the vehicle represents a shift for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the parent company of Range Rover, which has traditionally relied on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. JLR is owned by India’s Tata Motors but is based in Coventry, UK.
The delayed launch comes amid challenges faced by the company, including falling profits earlier this year. These difficulties were partly attributed to the effects of Donald Trump’s trade policies, which imposed tariffs on UK car imports, and a major cyber-attack last year that disrupted supply chains. To prepare for the new vehicle, JLR provided additional training to 10,500 employees working on the project. The electric Range Rover has also undergone extensive testing, equivalent to 38 trips around the world, making it the most rigorously tested Range Rover to date.
The new electric model boasts impressive performance, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in just 4.3 seconds. According to the company, this signals “a new era of enhanced refinement and capability.” While the electric powertrain will reduce the vehicle’s environmental impact compared to traditional petrol and diesel models, it is important to note that large SUVs, regardless of their power source, are consistently associated with a higher risk of serious injury or death in pedestrian collisions.
Range Rover’s electric model also offers a high degree of personalization through its bespoke commissioning service. Buyers can choose from a wide range of paint colors, materials, and design features, including unique embroidery and tailored color combinations. Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, described the vehicle as the result of “a decade of considered engineering and technological development.” Production will be supported by JLR’s propulsion manufacturing center in Wolverhampton, which produces both battery packs and electric drive units, as well as traditional internal combustion engines.
