Apple Pencil has traditionally been a stylus designed for use with iPads, offering features like pressure sensitivity and advanced gestures for drawing and note-taking. However, with the upcoming release of the iPhone Duo, Apple is exploring new ways to integrate the stylus with its latest smartphone. Despite this, the Apple Pencil will not be compatible with the iPhone Duo when it launches later this year. Instead, support for the stylus will require an upcoming iOS update, likely arriving in November with iOS 27.2, after the iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 in October. Only the newer USB-C version of the Apple Pencil will work with the iPhone Duo, while users with the Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro will need to purchase the USB-C model separately for an additional $79. Unlike iPads, which use magnets to attach and charge the Pencil, the iPhone Duo requires users to plug the stylus in using a USB-C cable. Despite this, the Apple Pencil can be used on both of the iPhone Duo’s screens—the large unfolded display and the outer screen—offering a versatile experience for users who need precise input. The USB-C Apple Pencil, however, lacks some of the features found in the Apple Pencil Pro, including pressure sensitivity, haptic feedback, a double-tap gesture, and a squeeze feature. It also does not support Apple’s Find My feature, which helps locate lost devices. These limitations may make the USB-C model less appealing for professional artists or note-takers who rely on advanced functionality. Looking ahead, rumors suggest that Apple may release an updated version of the Apple Pencil sometime next year, possibly with replaceable batteries. There is also speculation that a new Apple Pencil Pro model, specifically designed for the iPhone Duo or exclusively for it, could be introduced, offering improved features tailored for smartphone use. For now, users of the iPhone Duo will need to wait for the iOS update and choose the compatible stylus to take advantage of the Apple Pencil’s capabilities.
