Xbox users can now share both physical and digital games with family members who use different consoles, thanks to a feature called Disc to Digital and a digital license system. This allows a family member to access a game on their own console, even if the original owner has the game on a different console. The process involves two main steps, and Microsoft encourages this for family use. The first step is to connect and associate a Microsoft account on the Xbox console of the person who wants to share their game library. From the family member's console, a new account should be added and logged in with the account that owns the game. Then, that account should be set as the "primary Xbox." This allows other accounts on that console to access all the benefits and digital licenses linked to the original account. Xbox Game Pass subscriptions can also be shared with other profiles using this console. For physical games, the second step involves using the Disc to Digital feature. If the physical game is compatible, the user should insert the disc into a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game. This allows the user to request a digital license associated with their account. Once obtained, the digital license can be shared with other family members using the same sharing mechanisms as other digital licenses. Family members can then access the game from the console set as the primary Xbox, while the original owner can still use their own console. If the game is already owned digitally, no conversion is needed. It's important to note that Disc to Digital does not work with all physical games. However, Xbox states that thousands of titles are currently supported, and the list is expected to grow in the future. Users can check which consoles are associated with their Microsoft account through the devices page on their Microsoft account.
