New standards for EV charging

The year 2027 will bring new technical rules for public electric vehicle charging stations in Europe, aimed at making them easier to use and more compatible with smart charging services. These standards are based on the EN ISO 15118-20:2022 protocol, which allows electric vehicles and charging stations to exchange data more efficiently.

Plug & Charge technology

One of the key features introduced by the new standards is the Plug & Charge system, which allows drivers to start charging simply by plugging in their vehicle. This system eliminates the need for a badge or app, as the charging station automatically identifies the vehicle and handles billing. However, both the vehicle and the charging operator must support this technology for it to work.

Improved payment options

Starting in 2027, electric vehicle drivers in Europe will have more flexible payment options at public charging stations. From January 1, 2027, stations with at least 50 kW of power will need to offer credit card payments, especially those located on major European transport routes. This change is part of the European AFIR regulation, which seeks to simplify and standardize charging across the EU.

France’s gradual adoption

In France, the new payment requirements will not apply to all public charging stations immediately. The implementation will depend on the power, location, and installation date of each station. Despite this, the changes are expected to make long-distance travel in electric vehicles more convenient, especially as electric cars now account for nearly 42% of new vehicle sales in the country.
