France introduces aid for used EV charging stations

France’s Ministry of Economy, through Bercy, has announced a new initiative to support owners of used electric vehicles. Starting January 1, 2027, buyers of second-hand electric cars will be eligible for a 500 euro subsidy to install a home charging station.

Grant targets installation services

The financial assistance is specifically aimed at covering the costs of installation services for individual homes. The grant is only available if the chosen charging station is both connected and controllable, meaning it can be managed remotely or through a mobile app.

Charging stations vary in price

Connected charging stations available for home installation in 2026 range in price from 800 to 1,500 euros. These devices allow users to schedule charging times, optimize power usage, and track their energy consumption, offering greater control over electricity use.

Installation requires certified professionals

For charging stations with a power output exceeding 3.7 kW, installation must be performed by a certified IRVE installer. This is a legal requirement and a condition for the warranty, ensuring that the installation meets safety and performance standards.

New aid follows expiring program

The new 500 euro assistance is part of a broader effort to support electric vehicle adoption. It follows the CEE program, which has been applied to used electric vehicles and is set to end on December 31 of this year.

Details on how to apply remain unclear

When contacted, Bercy has not yet provided specifics on how the assistance will be applied for or administered. Further information is expected in the coming weeks as the government prepares for the program’s launch in 2027.
