The French comedy series Surveillant! is set to premiere on Disney+ on September 16, 2026. Directed by John Wax and co-written by Gauthier Plancquaert, the show features a star-studded cast including Audrey Lamy, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Benjamin Tranié, Eva Huault, Jeremy Nadeau, David Ayala, Ramzy Bedia, Hakim Jemili, Gustav Kervern, and François Damiens. The eight-episode series, each about 30 minutes long, offers a humorous and chaotic look into a fictional French prison. It draws inspiration from the mockumentary style of popular shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, using a blend of real-life documentary aesthetics and fictional storytelling to create a unique comedic tone. At the center of the series is Corinne Maillard, the director of a detention center in the fictional town of Chénoise. She faces the challenge of managing her facility while also trying to reconnect with her son, who is incarcerated there. This personal struggle adds emotional depth to the show’s otherwise comedic tone, creating a balance between humor and human drama. The series is praised for its strong casting choices, though some viewers may find the comedic style of actors like Jean-Pascal Zadi, Eva Huault, and Benjamin Tranié to be divisive. The show also includes guest appearances by notable French actors such as François Damiens, Ramzy Bedia, and Hakim Jemili. Surveillant! has been compared to other successful comedies like Modern Family, Abbott Elementary, and What We Do in the Shadows, though it carves out its own niche with a more chaotic and character-driven approach. The series is described as a funny and gently chaotic comedy that may not appeal to everyone, but it is noted for its effective writing and sharp comedic timing. It requires an appreciation for a specific kind of humor—often rooted in absurdity and workplace satire—but those who enjoy it are likely to find it both entertaining and well-crafted.
