European countries have begun announcing the films they will submit for the 2027 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. This competition is part of the preparations for the 99th Academy Awards, which will be held in Hollywood on March 14, 2027. The deadline for national candidates to submit their entries was set for November 12. Following this, the Academy will announce a shortlist of finalists on December 15. From this list, the number of nominees will be reduced to five, who will be revealed on January 21, 2027, along with the nominees in other categories.
A new rule for this year allows films shot in languages other than English to be submitted if they win the first prize at certain international film festivals. These include Berlin (Golden Bear), Busan (Best Film Award), Cannes (Palme d'Or), Sundance (World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize), Toronto (Platform Award), and Venice (Golden Lion). Last year, the Norwegian film Thelma, a co-production between France, Denmark, and Germany, won the prestigious award.
