A funeral was held in Ballintra, County Monaghan, for Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick "Paddy" Tobin, 48, who died in a hot tub accident at a holiday villa in Spain. The couple, who were on vacation with their teenage children in the resort town of Cullera near Valencia, were remembered at a heartfelt ceremony for their love and dedication as parents. The tragedy occurred on August 24, and the couple's funeral brought together many from their local community to honor their lives. According to local reports, postmortem examinations revealed that both Thomasina and Paddy suffered fatal heart stoppages after becoming trapped in the jacuzzi. The exact cause of their deaths remains unclear, though some theories suggest physical exhaustion from trying to escape or an electrocution incident while one attempted to save the other. Despite the uncertainty, the couple’s deaths have left a deep impact on those who knew them. The funeral at Our Lady of Knock Church was attended by hundreds of people, with Rev Canon Patrick McGinn delivering a touching tribute. He described Mr. Tobin as a "devoted father" and his wife as a "loving and lovely mum." He highlighted their life together in Greenwich, where they built a "lovely home," and emphasized that their children were "the most important part of their lives." The couple’s dedication to family was a central theme in the service. Thomasina Tobin, a chartered quantity surveyor and school governor, was remembered as a "very kind person" who passed on her kindness to others. Paddy Tobin was described as "always on the go," having been active in many sports throughout his life. The couple was praised for creating a "wonderful life in Greenwich" with their children, Rhea and Seamus, and for their generosity in welcoming family and friends into their home. Among the offertory gifts were a photo of the couple with their children, a sacred Pounamu greenstone from New Zealand, and a hard hat worn by Mrs. Tobin on construction sites in London. John McArdle, Thomasina Tobin's brother, expressed gratitude to the clergy and congregation for their support following the tragedy. The family requested donations to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, an organization that assists families in bringing home the bodies of loved ones who have died abroad. The funeral served as a tribute to a couple whose lives were defined by love, generosity, and a strong commitment to family.
