Patrick and Thomasina Tobin, a couple from Greenwich in southeast London, were found dead in the spa area of their villa in Cullera, Valencia, during a family vacation. They were on holiday with their two teenage children, one of whom has special needs. Their bodies were discovered by their 14-year-old son, who found them outside the hot tub, both naked. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of spa equipment and has drawn attention from local authorities and the couple's family. Initial investigations suggest that both Patrick and Thomasina died from cardiopulmonary arrest—essentially, their hearts and lungs stopped functioning. Authorities are considering several theories about how this might have happened. One possibility is that they became trapped in the hot tub's suction system. Both were found with scratch marks on their bodies, with Patrick’s injuries being more severe. It is believed Patrick may have been trapped first, and Thomasina may have died while trying to rescue him. Another theory involves a potential electrical fault in the hot tub, which could have caused one of the parents to suffer a heart attack, with the other dying in the attempt to save them. The hot tub in question was not manufactured by Goccia Spa, a company that produces similar hot tubs. The company stated it would be "impossible" for an adult to become trapped in the suction system of their products. Francisco Quero, a local spa technician, supported this, saying the motor is not strong enough to trap an adult. He added that even if the suction grill was removed, an adult might feel a scare and some bruising but would not be trapped. Carlos Navarro, CEO of Goccia Spa, explained that the hot tub at the villa was not made by his company but noted that its design makes it "practically impossible" for someone to become trapped. However, he acknowledged that if a suction hole became blocked, it could increase suction through another hole, though the pressure would still not be enough to trap an adult. He also mentioned that the system automatically shuts off every 15 minutes as a safety measure. The couple’s relatives have traveled to Spain to support their children during this difficult time. The UK Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is assisting with the investigation. As the case unfolds, it has sparked discussions about the safety of hot tubs and the need for clearer guidelines to prevent similar incidents.
