A new project has made it possible to run Nintendo Switch games directly on a jailbroken PlayStation 5, according to a recent report. The emulator, named ProsperoEden, is based on a project called Eden, which itself was derived from the Yuzu codebase. Yuzu is an open-source emulator that allows users to run Nintendo Switch games on personal computers. ProsperoEden runs natively on a modified PS5, meaning it doesn’t require an intermediary device to function. However, the project is still in its alpha phase, which means it is not yet fully developed and may have limitations in compatibility with the full range of Nintendo Switch games. Initial tests of ProsperoEden have shown promising results. Popular titles such as Cuphead have achieved 60 frames per second (fps), which is the standard for smooth gameplay on modern consoles. Metroid Dread runs at around 40 fps, while Super Mario 3D World performs between 35 and 53 fps depending on the scene. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also works, but it falls short of the 60 fps target, achieving approximately 39.5 fps. Other games tested include Hollow Knight, Horizon Chase Turbo, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Pokémon Legends Z-A, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Technically, ProsperoEden currently relies on OpenGL, a cross-platform API for rendering 2D and 3D graphics. It does not yet support Vulkan, another graphics API that is known for its efficiency and performance on modern hardware. This limitation may affect the emulator’s ability to fully utilize the PS5’s hardware capabilities. Developers working on the project have not yet provided an estimated timeline for when the emulator might achieve full compatibility with the Nintendo Switch library or support for Vulkan. The development of ProsperoEden highlights the growing interest in cross-platform gaming and the technical challenges involved in running games designed for one console on another. While jailbreaking a console is against the terms of service of most manufacturers, such projects often push the boundaries of what is technically possible. The project is being closely watched by gaming enthusiasts and developers alike, who are eager to see how it evolves in the coming months.
