Svolt launches semi-solid battery

A Chinese battery manufacturer, Svolt, has started mass production of a semi-solid battery for electric vehicles. The battery, named Dragon Armor, was launched from Svolt's Changzhou plant on October 26, 2026. It claims to restore 500 kilometers of range in just 12 minutes, a significant improvement over current technology.

Battery specifications and performance claims

The Dragon Armor battery features a 900-volt architecture and can accept a charging power of 6C. This allows for the addition of 500 kilometers of range in 12 minutes. However, the exact conditions under which this performance was measured have not been disclosed, leading to questions about its reliability in real-world scenarios.

Semi-solid battery design and cost

The semi-solid battery combines a liquid electrolyte with a solid component. This design allows Svolt to achieve a price similar to traditional lithium-ion batteries while maintaining durability. The manufacturer claims the battery can undergo more than 3,000 charge cycles, which translates to a theoretical lifespan of over one million kilometers.

Safety and protection features

Safety during ultra-fast recharging is ensured by liquid cooling on both sides and six layers of protection. The battery offers shock resistance three times higher than the Chinese standards, which is a notable improvement in safety for electric vehicles.

Potential applications and market reach

While no specific models have been officially announced to use the Dragon Armor battery, the large electric SUV Wey V8X from Great Wall Motor, Svolt's former parent company, is considered a likely candidate. The European market may also be affected, as Svolt supplies batteries for the Citroën ë-C3 and collaborates with the German Lion Smart.

Future plans and technology upgrades

Svolt plans to transition all its NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) cells to the semi-solid technology by the end of 2027. A new generation of semi-solid batteries is expected to be released in 2028, indicating continued development and investment in this technology.
