Solar project in Côte d'Ivoire gets major funding

AXIAN Energy, a renewable energy company based in Africa, has secured a major funding deal for a solar power plant in Côte d'Ivoire. The agreement, worth up to 55.5 million euros (about 62.34 million USD), comes from the Dutch development bank FMO and will support the construction of the 50 MWc Kong solar power plant.

Project details and long-term plans

The Kong solar power plant is expected to be completed in 2028 and will produce 96 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. The electricity will be sold to CI-ENERGIES under a 25-year contract. FMO will provide all the long-term debt financing for the project, over a period of 20 years.

AXIAN's ownership and partnership structure

AXIAN Energy holds a 55% stake in Africa Via, the Ivorian company developing the project. Africa Via itself owns 51% of the project company, with the remaining 49% held by InfraCo, a part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG). PIDG is a group that supports development projects with backing from several governments.

AXIAN's recent renewable energy projects

AXIAN Energy has been active in other solar projects across Africa. In March 2026, it completed a 72 million euro financing for the Kolda solar power plant in Senegal. This project combines 60 MWc of photovoltaic power with 72 MWh of energy storage.

Support from multiple funding sources

AXIAN Energy has also received support from other institutions, including the EAAIF fund and the German institution DEG. In December 2023, the EAAIF fund provided a 30 million USD loan to help develop AXIAN's renewable projects. Additionally, AXIAN signed a 60 million USD agreement with the Mauritius Commercial Bank in June 2026 to support its expansion across Africa.
