Performance explores multiverse concept

A new performance titled That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles examines the multiverse idea and the human longing to escape reality by imagining different lives. It combines theatre, live music, and video to suggest that multiple versions of our lives could exist at the same time, each offering unique views of ourselves and the world.

Creator draws from personal and cultural history

Created by Émilie Franco, this is her first original work. It links the trend of Reality Shifting—where people imagine living alternate lives, popular among teenagers on TikTok—with the story of Franco’s grandmother, Marianna Belmonte, who left Sicily after World War II in 1954, possibly moving to both Liège and New York.

Performance blends research and personal journey

Based on field research, the performance follows the dual paths of Marianna across continents and leads Franco to meet her own alter ego, Joan. Using sound and video archives, That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles builds a surreal world where temporary spaces try to open a doorway to a "desired reality," allowing personal fictions to reveal new possibilities.
