Greece and Portugal sign agreement

Greece and Portugal signed an intergovernmental agreement on Monday, November 2, 2026, in Athens, outlining Greece’s purchase of three Embraer KC-390 Millennium transport and refueling aircraft, with an option to buy three more.

Contract details and funding

The contract, valued at approximately 590 million euros, covers the acquisition of three aircraft, along with logistic support, electronic warfare equipment, training, maintenance, and technical assistance in Greece. The funds will be distributed between 2026 and 2031.

KC-390 capabilities and uses

The KC-390 Millennium is a multi-mission aircraft capable of carrying up to 26 tons of cargo, performing personnel or equipment drops, medical evacuations, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian aid. It can also be rapidly configured for in-flight refueling.

Modernization of Greek military transport

The acquisition is part of Greece’s modernization efforts, aimed at replacing aging C-130 Hercules aircraft. The first aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2027, with the remaining units arriving progressively until 2030.

NATO and European cooperation

Greece emphasizes the interoperability of the KC-390 with NATO forces and European partners in training, support, and logistics. This makes Greece the seventh European country to select the KC-390, following Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden.

Global interest in KC-390

The KC-390 has also been ordered by countries outside Europe, including Brazil, South Korea, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Colombia. For Embraer, the Greek contract highlights the growing acceptance of the KC-390 in the European military transport market.
