London’s iconic black cab is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of a new model from manufacturer LEVC. The updated taxi, expected to arrive in the UK during the second half of 2027, will retain the recognizable upright silhouette and large windows of the current TX model but will feature a more modern and streamlined design. The new vehicle will be specifically designed to meet Transport for London’s strict Conditions of Fitness, which include requirements such as a tight turning circle of 25 feet and compliance with accessibility standards to ensure it is usable by all passengers. The current TX model, launched in 2018 as a range-extended electric taxi, has been a success with over 12,000 units sold worldwide. According to LEVC, the TX has significantly reduced pollution in London, cutting NOx emissions from the city’s taxi fleet by 60% and preventing more than 450 million kilograms of CO2 emissions compared to the previous diesel-powered TX4 model. This has marked a major shift toward greener transportation in the city. While LEVC has not yet revealed specific details about the new model—such as its power source, range, and charging speed—it is expected to offer a longer electric-only range than the current TX. This improvement is anticipated to address one of the main criticisms of the existing model, which has faced challenges with its electric range and charging capabilities. The new taxi is also expected to bring enhancements in efficiency and overall usability. LEVC has worked closely with drivers, passengers, and fleet operators during the development of the new model, focusing on improvements in design, technology, and user experience. Tony Chi, LEVC’s chief executive, emphasized that the next-generation taxi will uphold the core values of the current TX while making significant strides in innovation and sustainability. The new model will be manufactured at LEVC’s Ansty factory near Coventry, with the current TX’s final assembly set to conclude this month. Existing owners will continue to receive support through LEVC’s current after-sales services. Geely, which has invested over £1 billion in LEVC over the past decade, will provide engineering support for the development of the new taxi.
