This exhibition in Besançon represents a new chapter in GLADYS's career, as she has for the first time entrusted the design of an exhibition around her work to Yves Gravelin. Yves Gravelin is the president of the association Grain d'Pixel and the organizer of a photography festival. GLADYS expressed satisfaction with the result, particularly with how Yves Gravelin chose to have her photographs interact and complement each other. The exhibition, titled Photographies, showcases her work in a way that highlights the visual and thematic connections between her pieces. GLADYS was born in Oran, Algeria, on May 21, 1950. Since the late 1970s, she has been creating a unique body of work that explores a wide range of subjects. She studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris, a prestigious art and design school in France. In 1989, she was awarded the Niépce prize, shared with photographer Patrick Zachmann. This prize honors excellence in photography and is named after Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, one of the earliest pioneers of photography. Throughout her career, GLADYS has worked in various areas of photography, from portraits to more conceptual themes such as the body, face, memory, and intimacy. In 1987, she received a Villa Médicis hors les murs scholarship, which enabled her to work in Japan. During this time, she created the series Mamonakou, focusing on the relationship between the body and writing. GLADYS has also contributed to various newspapers and magazines, including Le Monde, Libération, and Télérama, but she primarily focuses on her own artistic projects. In some of her series, GLADYS photographs faces in unconventional ways, such as flipping them or isolating them on a dark background. These techniques are meant to prompt reflection on identity and recognition. In 2023, she was named a chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, a French honor recognizing outstanding contributions to the arts and literature. The exhibition Photographies by GLADYS will take place from October 12 to October 25, 2026, at Galerie de l'Ancienne Poste in Besançon. It will be open daily from 2 pm to 6 pm, except on Mondays.
