To celebrate The Last of Us Day, PlayStation is offering a free gift to PS5 players. This event takes place annually on September 26, and this year it marks the release of a new animated theme based on The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us 2 Remastered. The theme includes animated visuals of characters Joel and Abby, as well as decorative elements inspired by the games. Once downloaded, the theme will be applied directly to the Welcome Center of PS5 consoles, which is the main interface users see when they turn on their systems. For years, PS4 users enjoyed dynamic themes—animated backgrounds that could be obtained through pre-orders, purchased for a small fee, or given for free. These themes personalized the home screen with animated icons and visuals tied to popular games. However, when the PS5 launched, this feature was not included, leaving many longtime PlayStation users disappointed, as they had accumulated themes over the years. In response, PlayStation introduced a compromise with the PS5's home hub, allowing users to personalize their interface with a static background. Later, the "Appearance" settings were added, letting users apply themes inspired by PlayStation's 30-year history, using the colors of earlier consoles. Now, a new free thematic background inspired by The Last of Us is available to all PS5 players. To download and install the The Last of Us theme, users should turn on their PS5 and navigate to the Welcome Center. Click on the "Change Background" button, which is marked by a painting icon at the top of the screen. From there, users can go to the "Games" tab and select The Last of Us to apply the theme. This feature has been available since April 2025, when PlayStation first allowed users to change the image on their Welcome Center using either a slideshow of favorite game photos, a static image, or one of the themes offered by the platform.
