Several boats from a sailing school capsized on Monday near the Bastia fire station, about 100 meters from the shore, according to the Service d'Incendie et de Secours de Haute-Corse (SIS 2B). At least 19 people, including several children, were involved in the incident. All were conscious when they were rescued. Lifeguards from Bastia joined the children in the water, while two small inflatable boats from the sailing club helped retrieve the individuals and transport them to Arinella beach. Twenty-four firefighters, along with four ambulances, a nurse's vehicle, and a doctor from the SAMU 2B (a regional emergency medical service) were mobilized to the scene. A gathering point was established at the Bastia rescue center, where the health status of the individuals is still being assessed. According to another report, the incident was an unusual event for the firefighters of Haute-Corse, who responded in the early afternoon in Bastia. On board the capsized boats were 19 students from the Fred Scamaroni High School and their instructors. The 24 firefighters rescued the students and their instructors. Three boys and one young woman were taken to the Bastia hospital for urgent medical care, while the rest were unharmed and comforted on-site. The incident highlights the risks associated with sailing activities, even for experienced groups. While no serious injuries were reported, the need for immediate emergency response and coordination among local rescue services was evident. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the capsizing, but the swift action by the firefighters and lifeguards likely prevented more severe consequences. The local community and officials are expected to provide further updates as the investigation continues. In the meantime, the event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures during water-based activities.
