The manga Witches and Cigarettes, published by Vega Editions, will be released on November 20 at a price of 8.35€. This is the first volume of the series, which was originally titled Majo to Kyurasu and launched in Japan in 2025 on the Comiplex website of publisher HERO's. The series currently has two volumes in Japan, with a third volume scheduled for release on October 29. The manga blends elements of decadent slice of life, comedy, fantasy, and yuri, a genre that often explores romantic or emotional relationships between women. The manga is the latest series by Kouhei Shibata, an author known in France for the comedies Reki & Yomi and Menya, both of which were published by Noeve Grafx editions. Shibata's work often combines humor with fantastical elements, and Witches and Cigarettes continues this tradition with its unique storyline. The plot follows the witch Shien and her apprentice Tama in 16th century Europe, who run a pharmacy known for its healing potions. However, witch hunts force them to flee and separate. Centuries later, in modern Japan, Tama finds Shien again, now a melancholic junkie unable to sell her remedies, which are now designed as suspicious cigarettes that she spends her time smoking. Despite Shien's condition, Tama agrees to team up with her to restart their business. The story explores themes of time, memory, and the challenges of rebuilding a relationship and a livelihood after centuries of separation. The blend of historical and contemporary settings, along with the mix of genres, is expected to appeal to a wide range of readers.
