A gendarme from the Oise department in northern France has been placed under formal investigation and placed in provisional detention since May, following a dozen complaints. According to a source close to the case, the military officer, in his forties, was caught by a colleague inserting an endoscopic camera—small, flexible devices typically used for medical inspections—under the door of the women’s restroom at the Nanteuil-le-Haudouin gendarmerie station. He had been the commander of that brigade since 2024. The gendarme was arrested at his home the same evening, and during a search, investigators found three such cameras.
According to the same source, child pornography images were also discovered on the officer’s computer equipment. Initially, the case was handled by the Senlis prosecutors' office, but it has since been transferred to the Paris prosecutors' office, according to judicial sources. About fifteen people have filed complaints against the officer. The gendarme has been suspended from his duties and will remain so "until the outcome of the disciplinary and criminal proceedings" related to him, the national gendarmerie stated to AFP.
The judicial investigation is being conducted by two specialized units: the Lille research section for civilian victims and the investigative unit of the National Gendarmerie Inspection General (IGGN) for military personnel. These units are responsible for handling cases involving both civilians and members of the military. The gendarmerie has expressed its "total solidarity" with the victims, emphasizing its commitment to supporting those affected by the incident.
This case has sparked concern within the gendarmerie and the broader public, given the officer's high rank and the sensitive nature of the alleged offenses. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may emerge as the legal process unfolds.
