Man faces murder trial

A 34-year-old man is set to appear in court on October 22 and 23 for the death of his childhood friend, who was stabbed in January 2023 in Villeurbanne. The accused admits to delivering the fatal blow but claims he did not intend to kill.

Incident in Saint-Jean neighborhood

More than three years after the stabbing, the justice system will examine the events that took place in the Saint-Jean neighborhood of Villeurbanne. The incident occurred during a dispute between two childhood friends, both aged 31 at the time, on the street du Canal.

Alleged stabbing and emergency response

According to Le Progrès, one of the men, who was intoxicated, allegedly stabbed his friend with a single knife blow. Emergency services arrived on the scene and found the victim bleeding heavily, with the accused attempting to stop the bleeding by compressing the wound.

Victim’s death and legal proceedings

The victim died several hours later in the hospital. The accused, who was arrested at the scene, admits to delivering the blow but denies any intent to kill. However, he will be tried for murder because the investigation established premeditation.

Legal defense strategy

The accused’s lawyer plans to request that the charges be reclassified as voluntary violence resulting in death, which carries a lesser penalty than murder, as it does not require intent to kill.
