The opera Pinocchio, created by composers and librettists Philippe Boesmans and Joël Pommerat, first performed at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2017. This production blends Boesmans' musical style with Pommerat's theatrical writing, resulting in an opera that is both poetic and emotionally engaging. It explores the journey from childhood to self-awareness, merging the classic story of Pinocchio with elements of fairground theater. In this version, the magical and the harsh aspects of life exist side by side, creating a unique and vivid world. The staging by Ambre Kahan features a dynamic, living space filled with creatures, where singers and musicians act as part of the same performing group. The musical direction is led by Léo Margue, with the score composed by Boesmans. Conductors involved in the performance include Romain Louveau and Nicolaz Royez. The set design and costumes are crafted by Anne-Sophie Grac, while lighting is designed by Zélie Champeau. Judith Scotto is responsible for makeup and wigs, and Louise Digard creates the masks and puppets. The sound design is handled by Clément Rousseaux, and the general management of the production is overseen by Marie Bonnier. The cast includes Anaïs Merlin as the puppet, Romain Dayez who plays multiple roles, and other performers such as Jean-Luc Ballestra, Jordan Mouaïssia, Marion Vergez-Pascal, and Vibe Rouvet. The ensemble consists of Miroirs Étendus, a group of 19 instrumentalists who contribute to the performance. The production is supported by several cultural institutions, including Les 2 Scènes / Scène nationale de Besançon, Théâtre Impérial – Opéra de Compiègne, Théâtre de Cornouaille / Scène nationale de Quimper, Opéra de Rennes, Théâtre Sénart / Scène nationale, and Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing. It is co-produced by Opéra Orchestre Normandie Rouen, Opéra-Comique, Opéra de Massy, and Le Quartz / Scène nationale de Brest. The co[opéra]tive also receives support from the Ministry of Culture and the Caisse des Dépôts, which serves as the main patron. The opera lasts approximately two hours and 20 minutes, including an intermission.
