Leaker suggests new Galaxy models may use DC dimming

On October 9, a leaker known as WalleGalaxy posted information on X suggesting that the upcoming Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra models may support DC dimming, a feature designed to reduce eye fatigue caused by prolonged smartphone screen use.

Samsung may be catching up with competitors

If confirmed, this would mark Samsung catching up with competitors such as Xiaomi and Honor, who have already implemented similar technology. Currently, Samsung's OLED screens use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to reduce brightness by rapidly turning pixels on and off.

DC dimming is a more comfortable alternative

This method can cause eye discomfort for some users, even though the flicker is not visible to the naked eye. DC dimming, in contrast, reduces the current sent to the pixels directly without causing flicker.

Galaxy S26 Ultra still uses PWM method

The Galaxy S26 Ultra still uses the PWM method, with a flicker rate of 480 Hz, or 480 times per second. In comparison, the Honor Magic 8 Pro reportedly reaches a flicker rate of 4320 Hz.

Faster flicker rates may be better for the eyes

The faster the flicker rate, the less it strains the eyes. WalleGalaxy also indicated that Samsung is working with specialized organizations to reduce visual fatigue on its older models and that the Eye Comfort Shield blue light filter on Galaxy devices will continue to improve.

Newer models may use different OLED panels

According to the leaker, the S27 Pro and Ultra models would also receive the new M16 OLED panels, while the S27 and S27+ models would retain the M14+ panels and thus continue using the 480 Hz PWM method.

Hybrid solutions may be used for dimming

Implementing DC dimming on recent variable refresh rate screens is reportedly challenging, leading manufacturers to use hybrid solutions. These screens may use DC dimming at medium or high brightness and switch back to PWM at low brightness, particularly when reading in the dark.

OLED panels struggle with low brightness

This is considered a necessary compromise because OLED panels have difficulty maintaining accurate colors at very low voltages.

New Galaxy models expected in 2027

The Galaxy S27 models are expected to be released in early 2027 and are also rumored to feature a significantly improved new Privacy Display, particularly for the S27 Ultra and S27 Pro.
