LG Display has announced the launch and start of mass production of a 24.5-inch OLED panel that can achieve a refresh rate of 720 Hz at Full HD resolution (1,920 × 1,080 pixels) with a response time of just 0.02 milliseconds. This panel is specifically designed for e-sports, targeting professional gamers who need high refresh rates for competitive first-person shooter (FPS) games. While Full HD is lower than QHD (2,560 × 1,440) or 4K (3,840 × 2,160) resolutions, it is well-suited for e-sports due to the smaller screen size, which allows for better visibility and higher refresh rates during fast-paced gameplay. Previously, LG Display had introduced OLED panels with 720 Hz refresh rates, but those required a reduction in resolution. For example, a 27-inch panel launched in 2025 operated at 720p (1,280 × 720), and a more recent model, the LG UltraGear 27GX790B, offered 540 Hz at QHD resolution and 720 Hz at a reduced resolution. The new 24.5-inch panel represents a strategic shift, as it maintains Full HD resolution while achieving 720 Hz through a newly developed control algorithm by LG Display. The panel is already in use in the ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace from ASUS, a 24.5-inch Tandem WOLED model announced in late August. This monitor will be the official screen for the PGL CS2 Major Singapore 2026, scheduled from November 24 to December 13. It will be the first Major of Counter-Strike to be played on OLED monitors. ASUS has stated the monitor will have a maximum brightness of 1,700 cd/m² and plans to release it in the United States in the beginning of the fourth quarter for $1,099. LG Display aims to boost the adoption of OLED technology in the e-sports market by offering a panel that combines the high refresh rates of traditional LCD panels with the benefits of OLED, including faster response times and superior contrast ratios. This development could signal a growing trend toward OLED monitors in competitive gaming, where performance and visual clarity are critical.
