The Union Bordeaux-Bègles (UBB) has extended the contract of its star winger, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, until 2029. The club made the announcement on Saturday, September 5, just before their first match of the season in the Top 14, France’s top rugby league, against Racing 92. Bielle-Biarrey, who joined UBB in 2021, has become one of the most prominent players in the French championship. Known for his speed, he is nicknamed "TGV LBB," a reference to the high-speed French train, due to his quick movements on the field. Bielle-Biarrey, who was born in the Isère region, has made a significant impact at UBB, scoring 64 tries in 83 matches. His performances earned him a spot in the French national team before the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where he scored four tries in four matches. Since then, he has set remarkable records, scoring 29 tries in 27 international appearances and helping France win the Six Nations tournaments in 2025 and 2026. He was named the best player of the Six Nations in both of those years. The contract extension came after months of discussions, particularly regarding the salary cap, which limits how much clubs can spend on player salaries. Bielle-Biarrey also wanted to ensure he could participate in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles with the French sevens team. However, he played an unusually high number of minutes last season (2,295 minutes), which led to his absence from the French team’s recent Nations Championship matches against New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. In other rugby news, the Supreme Court of Mendoza in Argentina confirmed the acquittal of two French players, Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auradou, who were accused of rape during a tour in 2024. Meanwhile, Ugo Mola, manager of Toulouse, warned that the Top 14 season would be highly competitive. In women’s rugby, Pauline Bourdon Sansus has been named captain of the French national team for the WXV tournament. Additionally, Toulouse Stadium was fined 2.7 million euros for violating the salary cap regulations.
