The upcoming version of the Peugeot 208, set to debut in 2027, is drawing attention from car enthusiasts and industry observers. French automaker Peugeot is currently developing the next iteration of its popular compact car, having recently introduced a sporty variant called the GTI. The current Peugeot 208, launched in 2019, will soon be replaced by an all-electric model built on the new STLA One platform, which is specifically designed for smaller vehicles. This new version is expected to offer greater range and faster charging than the existing E-208. Recently, spy photographers captured images of a heavily disguised prototype, suggesting that the design will differ significantly from the Polygon concept car unveiled in 2025, which featured dramatic butterfly doors. The new Peugeot 208 is expected to take the form of a five-door compact sedan with a more conventional look. It will follow Peugeot’s latest design language, featuring separate headlights and a closed front grille, similar to the brand’s other electric models. The iconic illuminated “claws” near the headlights will also be included, along with plastic guards around the wheel arches, which are expected to remain part of the design. Inside, the car will feature significant changes, particularly in the driving experience. The steering wheel will be inspired by the Hypersquare concept, and Peugeot plans to use electric steer-by-wire technology, which removes the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. This allows for more flexible steering behavior and supports future automated driving features. The vehicle will also use a “Software Defined Vehicle” architecture, managed by the STLA Brain system, which centralizes many of the car’s electronic and software functions. The new E-208 will be based on the STLA One platform and will be available only in fully electric powertrains with improved range compared to the current model. However, Peugeot intends to continue selling the current Peugeot 208 alongside the new electric version to offer a traditional internal combustion engine option. Peugeot has announced plans to introduce seven new models by 2030, with the next-generation Peugeot 208 playing a key role in this strategy. The company is clearly focused on expanding its electric vehicle lineup while maintaining its presence in the traditional car market. The E-208 GTI variant is also expected to remain in the product lineup, offering a sportier option for buyers.
