Google has integrated its advanced Gemini AI into its online office suite, which includes Docs, Slides, and Sheets. This AI can generate images or charts based on text input, and users can ask Gemini to search through other Google services like Drive, Gmail, or the web to write documents that are linked to data found in those sources. This integration aims to make document creation more efficient by allowing AI to pull relevant information and present it in a coherent format.
A new feature called Gemini Notebook, previously known as NotebookLM, is now available in Google Docs. This feature allows users to use notebooks as a source of information when generating text. When entering a request in the Gemini field at the bottom of a Docs document or in the side panel, users can press the « @ » key and type the name of a notebook. The notebook then appears in the list of proposed sources, and Gemini can use it to write the requested text, including citations from the notebook sources with links for easy reference.
The feature was made available on Wednesday, September 23, and was not rolled out gradually. To use Gemini Notebook, users need a Google Workspace subscription, such as Business Standard or Plus, Enterprise Standard or Plus, or Education Plus, with smart features enabled. Individual users must subscribe to Google AI Pro (21.99 euros per month) or Ultra (starting at 99.99 euros per month). The entry-level Google AI Plus plan (4.99 euros per month) does not provide access to this feature.
This update reflects Google's ongoing efforts to enhance its productivity tools with AI capabilities that assist users in creating more accurate and well-researched documents. The integration of Gemini Notebook into Docs is a significant step toward making AI-powered document creation more accessible and practical for professionals and students alike.
