The Canal+ group launched a new free digital platform called Sport+ on Friday, focusing on sports content for users in France. This platform is seen as a major development for the company, as it aims to offer a mobile-friendly experience that could attract new audiences. The service was announced earlier in the week, with details shared with the press. Sport+ provides free live sports content supported by advertisements and includes access to major events such as the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, and the rugby Top 14. The content is presented in a "multi live" format, where users can view up to nine matches simultaneously through small thumbnails on their smartphones or TVs. However, to watch a specific match in full screen, users must subscribe to the service. On Sunday, Sport+ will broadcast the Singapore Grand Prix of Formula 1 in full screen, though this will be limited to three to four races per season. The platform will also feature upcoming events, including a Europa League match between Rennes and Crete FC on October 15, and a women’s football match between Lyon and Marseille on October 24. Églantine Leclabart, director of product and global marketing for Canal+'s "PayTV," said there is strong demand for such a service, which current offerings do not fully satisfy. Sport+ also includes vertical videos capturing key moments in sports, along with a sports calendar that includes an "anti-spoiler" feature to hide results of completed events. The platform is divided into three sections: Shorts, Calendar, and Live & Replay. The Shorts section offers vertical videos, well-suited for social media, and includes exclusive, informative, and entertaining content around sports events. The Calendar section provides details such as dates, times, live scores, statistics, rankings, and broadcast channels for various sports events, from seven days before to ten days after the event. The Live & Replay section offers a 24/7 live channel and free streaming of Canal+ programs and reports. For eight competitions where Canal+ holds broadcasting rights, the platform will provide exclusive footage, a selection of matches, and the Multi-Live feature, allowing users to follow multiple sports matches at once without paying. However, full-screen viewing of a match is only available to subscribers. The Canal+ App will also be updated with new features, including a video carousel called "The Feed," a new vertical player called "The Scroll," an improved sports calendar, and an enriched content search powered by artificial intelligence. This AI-powered search, developed with OpenAI, allows users to find programs using more complex and precise phrases. While the platform is free to use, users must watch some advertisements before and during the programs and create an account if they are not already Canal+ subscribers.
