Apple and LG are reportedly working together to develop a range of smart home devices, including a doorbell, a lock, a thermostat, and cameras, according to Bloomberg. These products will be sold under the LG brand and are not expected to be available for several months. Details about availability in France are currently unclear. LG has submitted documentation to the FCC, the American telecommunications regulator, and UL Solutions, a certification company, in recent weeks. The documents include product names such as LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat, and LG Temperature Sensor. LG has requested that photos and details remain confidential until early next year. While the existence of these products is confirmed through public documents, Apple's involvement is not mentioned in the filings and relies only on initial reports. Many of these devices are expected to support various wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread—a low-power radio protocol for connected devices—and Matter, an open standard that allows devices from different brands to communicate with each other. The smart lock would also use UWB (ultra-wideband), a precise location technology found in devices like Apple's AirTag 2, which could allow the door to unlock automatically when the user approaches. Apple is expected to expand its smart home offerings on October 13, with the introduction of a connected screen, an updated Apple TV, and a new HomePod mini. However, the LG accessories are not expected to be available before "at least several months." Apple is also reportedly working on other products, including a privacy-focused home monitoring device, a screen-equipped hub mounted on a robotic arm, and a home security monitoring service. No prices, specific release dates, or markets have been announced, and there is no mention of a potential release in France. Since Matter is an open standard, users may want to look for compatible accessories in the meantime, as they should work with any smart home hub, including Apple's. It may also be worth waiting for the upcoming connected screen, which could be announced soon, to compare different smart home solutions.
