Slovenian director Lun Sevnik has wrapped filming on his debut feature film, The Healers (Zdravilca), which was produced by Rok Biček's Cvinger Film. The production took place over 30 days, with filming locations in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Split, Croatia. The film centers on Max, a charismatic new-age healer who is struggling with debt and personal challenges, including pressure from his landlord, local loan sharks, and his ex-partner over custody of their ten-year-old son, Val. When Max takes Val to visit a wealthy client named Vida instead of going on a planned birthday trip to the zoo, Vida becomes convinced that the boy has the power to save her life with his touch. As word spreads among Ljubljana's spiritual community, Max tries to use the boy's perceived gift to generate income and improve his family's situation. However, Val begins to feel the burden of these expectations, while Max's financial troubles escalate. The film features Matevž Sluga in the role of Max, Anvar Nikolenko as Val, and Nataša Barbara Gračner as Vida. Nikolenko was chosen from over 600 children who auditioned for the role. The supporting cast includes Macedonian actress Sara Klimoska as Aleks and Grega Zorc as Samo. Sevnik co-wrote the screenplay with Atila Urbančič, with whom he developed the project through TorinoFilmLab's ScriptLab programme. Sevnik is a graduate of Prague's FAMU film school and has previously received Vesna awards for his short films Voyage Voyage and Playing. His master's degree film, The Sea in Between, won several awards, including the PAG Youth Jury Award at the Trieste Film Festival. The film's cinematographer is Kryštof Melka, a Czech filmmaker who has worked on all of Sevnik's previous short films. Maja Šavc was responsible for production design, collaborating with Croatian costume designer Mia Ventin. Goran Ignjatovski handled makeup, and Martin Vovk was in charge of sound recording. The Healers is a collaborative production involving Slovenia, Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and France. It was staged by Rok Biček for Cvinger Film, in partnership with several international production companies, including Nosorogi, MB Grip, PPFP, Nochi Film, Woodz Production, and Kinoelektron, as well as Radiotelevizija Slovenija. The film received support from the Slovenian Film Centre and the North Macedonia Film Agency, with participation from Viba Film Studio. The project was also supported by ReAct and the Creative Europe MEDIA program. These collaborations highlight the international scope of the production and the effort to bring diverse perspectives to the film. The film is expected to premiere in 2027, marking Sevnik's first full-length feature and a significant milestone in his career. With a mix of drama, family conflict, and spiritual themes, The Healers promises to explore the complex relationships between hope, responsibility, and the pressures of public expectation. The film's international co-production model reflects a growing trend in European cinema to combine resources and talents across borders to create compelling and diverse storytelling.
