Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he nearly joined Liverpool in 2016, during his time playing for Monaco in France’s Ligue 1. At the time, the English club was trying to sign the young French forward, and Mbappé, now 27, said his mother was a big fan of then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. She even took the first step in the negotiations by visiting Liverpool and Anfield, the club’s iconic stadium. Mbappé’s mother watched matches alone to experience the atmosphere and imagined her son playing there. Despite his mother’s enthusiasm, Mbappé decided not to follow her advice. He wanted to stay in his home city of Paris and did not want to leave France before establishing himself as a top player. As a result, he joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on loan in 2017, with an option to make the move permanent for 180 million euros (£165.7 million). Over the next seven years, Mbappé became PSG’s all-time leading scorer before moving to Real Madrid in 2024. Jurgen Klopp, now a pundit for Magenta TV, shared details about Liverpool’s efforts to sign Mbappé during the 2026 World Cup. He described how the club went to great lengths to bring the young star to Anfield. Liverpool arranged a private jet and food for Mbappé and his family, flying them from Blackpool in England to Nice in France. The jet was described as having "five rooms or something," and the family boarded it. Klopp said they flew in a circle and had discussions with Mbappé’s family, but the talks did not result in a deal. Klopp called the attempt to sign Mbappé "a funny story" and admitted that Liverpool "really went all out." However, Mbappé ultimately chose to join PSG, where he flourished and became one of the most celebrated players in European football. The near-miss with Liverpool remains a curious footnote in the careers of both Mbappé and Klopp.
