Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he nearly joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017, with his mother and agent exploring the possibility of a move to Anfield. At the time, Mbappé was 18 years old and had a private meeting with then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on a private jet over the south of France. His mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, attended the meeting, and Klopp tried to convince Mbappé to move to Liverpool instead of joining Paris-Saint Germain (PSG). Mbappé explained that his mother was a big fan of Klopp and had considered Liverpool her favorite destination for him. Despite the meeting, Mbappé ultimately decided to join PSG on loan for the 2017-18 season before signing permanently with the club the following year. He remained with PSG in Paris until his move to Real Madrid in 2024. Mbappé stated that he chose PSG because, as someone born and raised in Paris, he felt there was no better feeling than to prove he could be a star in his hometown. Klopp recently mentioned the meeting on the private jet earlier this year, calling it "the most expensive non-transfer we ever made." The comment highlights how close the deal came to happening, despite ultimately not materializing. Mbappé’s decision to stay in Paris proved successful, as he became one of the most prominent footballers in the world during his time at PSG. The near-transfer to Liverpool showcases how Mbappé’s early career was shaped by both personal and professional considerations. While Klopp's efforts to bring him to Anfield were unsuccessful, the encounter remains a notable moment in football history, illustrating the high stakes and personal dynamics involved in top-tier player transfers.
