Disney+ subscribers seek compensation

Premium subscribers in Europe are being asked to request compensation due to the removal of certain video features from Disney+ without a price reduction. European consumer groups have called for at least 5 euros per month in refunds for affected users.

Consumer groups demand refunds

Euroconsumers, along with Belgian, Italian, and Portuguese consumer associations, has formally requested automatic refunds of at least 5 euros per month for affected Premium subscribers. This request includes retroactive compensation for past months.

Financial stakes could be high

The potential financial impact of these refunds could be significant, with estimates suggesting up to 63 million euros per month if all 12.6 million affected subscribers in 11 European countries received the requested compensation.

Cause of the feature removal

The removal of features like Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on Disney+ in Europe began in February 2026 and was linked to a patent dispute between Disney and InterDigital. This dispute led to the removal of several video features in 11 European countries.

Degraded service for full price

Consumer associations argue that subscribers are paying the full Premium price for a degraded service. The Premium subscription in France currently costs 15.99 euros per month, compared to 10.99 euros for the Standard subscription.

Requesting compensation

In France, no automatic refunds are currently planned. However, affected Premium subscribers can request compensation individually by contacting Disney+ customer service and explaining the issue with their subscription features.

Different procedures for different billing methods

If a subscription is billed through a third party such as an internet provider or Apple, the refund process may vary. Subscribers must first identify who bills their subscription and then contact that provider’s customer service.

Alternative: switch to Standard subscription

Disney has suggested that affected subscribers could switch to the Standard subscription, which costs 10.99 euros per month. This option saves 5 euros per month but removes some features like 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos.

Disney responds to concerns

Disney has stated it is taking steps to support affected customers and promises to respond to the consumer associations. However, the 5 euros per month requested by Euroconsumers is not guaranteed at this stage.
