French startup creates foundationless wind turbine

A French startup named Bonvan has developed a 10-meter-high wind turbine that requires no foundation, according to a report. The project is supported by Amazon through its Sustainability Accelerator program.

Turbine design emphasizes ease and durability

The wind turbine features a 5 kW permanent magnet synchronous alternator and is claimed by Bonvan to produce up to 10,000 kWh per year. It has a lifespan of 25 years with only two hours of annual maintenance.

Installation is quick and stable

The wind turbine is designed for ease of installation, as it does not require a foundation or a building permit. Its stability is ensured by four weighted blocks, and the 7.1-meter mast can be raised in under two minutes using an integrated mechanism, capable of withstanding winds approaching 190 km/h.

Wind power as a complement to solar energy

While solar energy has become the most practical solution for producing electricity, small wind power has long been seen as a potential solution for electricity generation day and night, including during winter. The two co-founders of Bonvan believe in the potential of small wind power and have developed a retractable domestic wind turbine that has attracted the attention of Amazon.

Challenges in urban wind power

According to the report, many startups have attempted to democratize domestic wind power, but most have failed. This is partly due to significant wind turbulence in urban areas near the ground, which can affect the performance of installations. This is particularly true for devices designed to be directly fixed on building roofs, such as the Alae wind turbine from E-Taranis, which is now in liquidation.

New approach to urban wind turbines

However, new companies like Bonvan and Collaborative Energy are betting on wind turbines mounted on masts, which can be kept away from buildings, potentially offering better performance. If Bonvan's wind turbine is selected, a prototype may be deployed on one of Amazon's European sites.
