Eolink's 5 MW offshore wind turbine may be sold as the startup faces uncertainty after delays and financial trouble.
Startup faces financial uncertainty
Eolink, an Anglo-French startup, is in financial trouble and has entered judicial recovery, which means it must find a buyer to continue operating. The company had been working on a large wind turbine for the open sea but now faces uncertainty about its future.Wind turbine project delayed
Eolink began its project in 2015, aiming to create a wind turbine designed for the open sea. Its 5 MW demonstrator, which is finally ready to be assembled, has faced a two-year delay. The turbine is set to be assembled at the port of Brest.Company offers design expertise
Eolink has shared its situation on LinkedIn, offering two main opportunities. One is the acquisition of its design capabilities, which include methods, software, and patents. These are especially valuable for offshore floating wind, naval, and offshore industries.Wind turbine components are ready
The company is also offering its 5 MW demonstrator for sale. All its components are stored in Brest, waiting to be assembled. Once completed, the turbine would be 150 meters tall at the blade tip and 50 meters wide. Its moorings are already in place on the SEM-REV site off the coast of Croisic.Past challenges in the sector
Eolink’s situation echoes that of Sabella, a French company that specialized in hydrokinetic turbines. Sabella was placed in judicial liquidation in January 2024 but later found a buyer for its D10 hydrokinetic turbine prototype, which was installed off the coast of Ouessant.
