New service for AI agents

1Password has launched a new service called 1Password for Agents, which allows AI agents to connect to user accounts without ever seeing their passwords. The service ensures that no action proceeds without explicit user approval.

How the service works

When an AI agent encounters a login page, it identifies itself to 1Password using a unique digital key. The application then sends a notification specifying which account is being accessed and the reason for the request.

User approval required

If the user approves, 1Password fills in the form, allowing the agent to continue its task without having seen the password. User approval is required from their own device, similar to two-factor authentication, and the agent cannot approve its own request.

Building on previous work

This service builds on previous work by 1Password, which was reported in July to have enabled the AI model Claude from Anthropic to connect to accounts on Mac without the password or one-time code passing through the model. The browser extension also locked the vault as soon as an agent took control.

Future integrations

John Torrey, who leads the business activity for the publisher, explains that 1Password for Agents is based on this integration and is designed for personal agents that do not depend on the user's desktop computer. The deployment of the integration is being done in stages, with plans to integrate it with Muse (Meta) and Grok Bot in the coming days.

Other expected integrations

Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work, and others such as Townie, Browserbase, Browser Use, Perplexity, and Ramp are also expected to be integrated soon. However, Gemini Spark (Google) and Microsoft Scout are not currently on the list.

User settings and costs

Regarding settings, John Torrey assures that users can choose which credentials are accessible, the tasks involved, and the duration of access. The service is offered at no additional cost to Individual and Family accounts hosted on 1Password.com.

Limitations and variations

However, 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca accounts are not supported for now, and the company warns that protections may vary from one integration to another.
