French public opinion is split on student protests, with over half finding government proposals insufficient but 54% wanting the mobilization to end.
Poll shows divided opinions on protests
A recent poll by Elabe for BFMTV found that more than half of French people believe the government's response to student and university protests is not enough, even though 54% want the demonstrations to end. The survey, released on October 28, shows that public opinion remains split on how to proceed with the ongoing movement.Age and political divides shape views
Younger people, particularly those aged 18-24 and 25-34, are more likely to support continuing the protests, with 63% and 59% respectively. In contrast, older age groups, especially those over 65, are more inclined to end the mobilization, with 65% wanting it to stop. Political affiliation also plays a role, with 69% of New Popular Front (NPF) voters wanting the protests to continue, compared to 81% of Together and the Republicans (LR) voters who want them to end.Public support for November 5 mobilization
Nearly six out of ten French people (59%) support the planned mobilization on November 5, with 32% expressing support and 27% showing sympathy. The majority of trade unions back this date, focusing on issues like purchasing power and wages. However, 28% are opposed or hostile, and 13% are indifferent. Younger people and those in lower-income households are most in favor of the mobilization, and women are more supportive than men.Government proposals face mixed reactions
On Monday, the government announced measures to address the student and university crisis, including new higher education spots, 200 million euros for building renovations by 2027, and reforms to the Parcoursup platform. Over a third (36%) of respondents believe these proposals address the demands, while 52% think they are heading in the right direction but are still insufficient. Only 12% consider the proposals poor. Younger people and NPF voters are the most critical, with 67% of NPF supporters dissatisfied.Survey methodology and scope
The survey included 1,002 people from Metropolitan France aged 18 and over, selected using a quota method to ensure representation based on gender, age, profession, region, and type of agglomeration. The online survey was conducted between October 27 and 28, 2026.
