A survey conducted by Elabe for BFMTV and published on October 7, 2026, found that two-thirds of the French public believe the use of force by the police has not been excessive since the beginning of the student mobilization. Among those surveyed, 41% consider the use of force appropriate, 24% find it insufficient, and 34% find it excessive. The opinion that the use of force is excessive is mainly held by individuals aged 18 to 24 (59%), but this percentage decreases with age, with only 26% of those over 50 finding the use of force excessive. The survey also revealed differences in opinion based on political affiliation. Seventy percent of voters for the Nouveau Front populaire consider the use of force excessive, while 57% of voters from the presidential camp consider it appropriate. Among voters for the National Rally (RN), 49% consider the use of force appropriate, and 40% consider it insufficient. Since the start of the student movement, the National Police Inspection (IGPN) has received 18 investigations, primarily concerning injured youth. Concerns have been raised about the use of certain weapons against students, particularly after an incident in Lens where a student's hand was torn off by a police grenade. In response, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on October 7 that he would "suspend" the use of loudening grenades for the student movement until "light is shed" on the matter. The Elabe opinion poll for BFMTV was conducted from October 6 to October 7, 2026, among a representative sample of 1,001 residents of Metropolitan France aged 18 and over, interviewed online using the quota method applied to the following variables: gender, age, profession, region, and type of agglomeration.
