Mistral AI, a company primarily focused on business-to-business (B2B) applications, has now made its AI technology available to the general public through a partnership with Mozilla. This collaboration introduces Mistral’s AI models into Firefox’s Smart Window feature, which is designed to help users manage their browsing experience by organizing tabs, browsing history, and answering questions. The Smart Window was introduced in Firefox version 155 and is currently in beta testing. Users can access this feature by clicking the Firefox button in the top right corner of the browser window. The Smart Window allows users to choose from several AI models, including Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, Qwen 3, and Mistral Small 4, which is recommended for general use. Additional models can be added using an API key or authentication token. In a press release, Mozilla and Mistral highlighted their shared commitment to open-source principles, stating that the partnership aims to bring Mistral’s scientific innovations to consumers worldwide. Mozilla’s CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, emphasized the importance of the browser as a platform where different AI technologies can coexist and compete. He noted that the browser should remain a space that preserves the freedom to explore and choose, echoing the original spirit of the internet. According to Enzor-DeMeo, Firefox has around 200 million monthly users globally, with over 50 million daily desktop users and between 14 and 16 million mobile users. The United States, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom account for the majority of these users. For Mistral, this partnership represents a shift toward public-facing AI applications, as the company typically focuses on B2B clients. On September 15, Mistral announced two new B2B partnerships: one with TotalEnergies to develop AI models for reservoir exploration and engineering, and another with Numspot to create a marketplace for public organizations and businesses. These initiatives will integrate Mistral’s AI models with Numspot’s cloud infrastructure, further expanding Mistral’s reach into specialized industries.
