Mozilla has launched the beta version of Smart Window, a new AI-powered feature for its Firefox browser. This tool is designed to be powerful, flexible, and free, offering users a more interactive and intelligent browsing experience. Currently available on macOS and Windows, it is not yet officially supported on Linux, although some users have reported using it on that platform. The feature has been in deployment since early September and is currently accessible only in France, with content available in French.
Smart Window is part of Firefox’s broader strategy to regain ground in the competitive browser market, where it has largely been overshadowed over the past decade. The feature can be toggled on or off, set as a default homepage, and offers three distinct modes: Fast, Flexible, and Personal. These modes allow users to choose different AI models based on their needs—Fast for quick tasks, Flexible for more complex interactions, and Personal for tailored assistance. The feature is designed not to slow down the browser and includes a "Memories" function that helps the AI assistant recall previous interactions, which users can enable or disable per conversation.
The AI models available in Smart Window are powered by three different providers: Google’s Gemini-3.1-flash-lite for speed, Alibaba’s Qwen3-235b for flexibility, and OpenAI’s GPT-OSS-120B for personalization. Users can switch between models within the Smart Window interface and configure Firefox to open directly in this AI-enhanced mode. The feature also includes contextual assistance, tab management, integrated search, and a privacy-focused design that prioritizes local processing when possible, minimizing data sent to external servers.
While Smart Window has sparked renewed interest in Firefox, especially among users drawn to its AI capabilities and improved security features, some potential adopters are still hesitant. A notable absence is the "Workspaces" feature, which Opera offers and allows users to organize tasks and tabs more efficiently. This gap may be a barrier for some considering a switch from other browsers.
