Former England rugby player Mako Vunipola has reversed his decision to retire after a phone call from Leicester Tigers head coach Geoff Parling convinced him to return to English rugby. The 35-year-old, who previously played for Saracens and won multiple domestic and European titles with them, has signed with Leicester after spending two seasons in France with Vannes. Vunipola and Parling were teammates for England more than a decade ago and also played together on the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia.
Vunipola had been planning to retire after his time in France, but Parling’s call changed his mind. “I was pretty set on retiring last year, finishing my time in France,” Vunipola told BBC East Midlands Today. “Then in January I had a conversation with Geoff, he rang me and we spoke about this season and he asked me the question if I'd like to come and see if I can add value here at Leicester.” The discussion was positive, and Vunipola said his family, particularly his wife, played a significant role in his decision to return to England.
Parling believes Vunipola’s experience and leadership will be crucial for Leicester, especially with key players like Niki Smith and Hanro Liebenberg leaving the team. “He adds vast experience to the Tigers, and also a calming voice to the pack,” Parling said. Managing Vunipola’s physical workload will be important, as the former Saracens player is now past 36 and will need to balance performance with recovery.
Vunipola is focused on contributing on the field and leading by example for Leicester. “I can do all the talking I want off the field, but I have to make sure I play well and add value on the field to help this team,” he said. While he was asked if he might return to international rugby, Vunipola said his immediate focus is on Leicester. “I just have to be here and be a player for Leicester first and foremost. But no, nothing of that sort is in my mind,” he added with a smile.
