Renault's new leader criticizes past partnerships

François Provost, Renault’s new head, has criticized some of the decisions made by his predecessor, Luca de Meo, especially concerning collaborations with other carmakers. He pointed out that Renault allowed partner manufacturers to create models too similar to its own, which he now sees as a mistake.

Example of similar models highlighted

At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Provost specifically mentioned the Nissan Micra electric, which closely resembles the Renault R5. He argued that the two models are too similar in design and components, which could confuse consumers and dilute Renault’s brand identity.

Shared platforms and components

Renault has long partnered with other manufacturers to share the costs of developing electric vehicles. However, Provost believes the group did not ensure enough difference between models. The Nissan Micra and Renault R5 share the same platform, motors, batteries, and much of their equipment, and are even built in the same factory in Douai, France.

New approach to partnerships

Provost has said Renault will now require more differentiation in models developed with partners. He cited the new Pixo, based on the Twingo, as an example of the need for distinct design and branding. This shift means Renault will be more selective about partnerships and ensure models look and feel different from each other.

Impact on future collaborations

This new policy could increase costs for Renault, as more changes may be needed to differentiate models. However, Provost believes long-term strategic partnerships are more valuable than short-term deals. Upcoming models like the Renault 5 and the electric Twingo are expected to reflect this new philosophy, though it remains to be seen how effectively it will be applied.
