Tottenham Hotspur have signed Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea, giving him a chance to restart his career just before the transfer deadline. Mudryk, who was once one of the most sought-after players in Europe, was signed by Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for €100 million, including €70 million upfront and €30 million in add-ons. However, his career hit a major setback when he was banned for an adverse drug test result involving meldonium, a substance that can improve respiratory and stamina performance. Mudryk was suspended from playing for four years by the Football Association (FA) before his ban was reduced after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The FA later clarified that meldonium is no longer on the banned list, and had his test been conducted under current rules, it would not have triggered an adverse finding. Tottenham’s decision to sign Mudryk was influenced by their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, who previously worked with the 25-year-old at Shakhtar Donetsk, where Mudryk had a breakthrough season in 2021-22. De Zerbi is looking to build a new front line with left-winger Mudryk, right-sided attacker Sávio, and central striker Omar Marmoush, who both joined from Manchester City. Tottenham had previously attempted to sign other players like Cody Gakpo and Iliman Ndiaye but were unsuccessful, leading De Zerbi to turn to Mudryk. The loan deal includes a £75 million purchase option, and Mudryk expressed his excitement about reuniting with De Zerbi, calling him his “football father” and expressing his belief in his guidance. Tottenham’s recent dealings with Chelsea mark a rare move, as the club had not conducted any business with the London-based team since 2009, when goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini joined on a free transfer. On the same transfer deadline day, Tottenham also signed centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea for £7 million, replacing Kevin Danso, who was loaned to Sunderland with a mandatory £25 million buy option. Additionally, midfielder Pape Sarr was loaned to Juventus with a €30 million buy option, further reshaping Tottenham’s squad for the upcoming season. Mudryk’s return to competitive football comes at a crucial time for both him and Tottenham. With his ban resolved and a new opportunity at a top club, Mudryk aims to rebuild his career under De Zerbi’s guidance. The manager, who emphasized Mudryk’s resilience and talent, hopes to see the player demonstrate the growth he has experienced over the past two years. As Tottenham continues to strengthen their squad, Mudryk’s inclusion adds depth and experience to their attacking options, potentially offering a fresh dynamic to their play.
