New Monster Hunter Expansion Announced

Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was revealed during Sony's State of Play event before the Summer Game Fest. The expansion is scheduled for a 2027 release and aims to enhance the Monster Hunter series with new areas, monsters, and a novel gameplay feature called "The Ignifier."

The Ignifier Mechanic Explained

The Ignifier allows players to chain aggressive attacks against monsters to fill an energy gauge. This gauge can build up to three distinct boost charges, which affect movement, mobility, combos, guarding, dodging, and grant powerful, weapon-specific attacks.

Paris Games Week Experience

The 2026 edition of Paris Games Week gave visitors a chance to try out the new content and challenges of Ascendence in multiplayer. Key developers, including director Takuro Hiraoka and producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, were present at the event to engage with players and share insights.

Development Focus on Feedback

According to Hiraoka, the expansion builds on the foundation of Monster Hunter: Wilds by introducing the Ignifier and refining existing mechanics based on player input. Tsujimoto noted that while player feedback has been crucial, not all suggestions can be implemented.

Balancing New and Core Elements

The developers emphasized the need to maintain the core Monster Hunter experience while introducing new features. They highlighted the game's diversity, including 14 weapon types, unique monsters, and the ability to combine these in multiplayer sessions.

Challenges in Expansion Development

Tsujimoto explained that Ascendence is an expansion, so players are expected to have completed Wilds. However, Wilds was designed to be accessible to newcomers, allowing them to learn the basics before moving on to Ascendence.

Longer Development Time Explained

The developers acknowledged the longer wait time for Ascendence, citing the complexity of modern hardware and the need to meet quality standards. They emphasized that they prioritize delivering a high-quality product over adhering to fixed deadlines.

Balancing Game Mechanics

The most challenging part of development was integrating the Ignifier into existing monsters without disrupting game balance. The developers thanked the French community for its support and encouraged patience until the game's release.
