Monster Hunter Wilds expansion details revealed

Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will launch in early 2027 as a major expansion for the 2026 game Monster Hunter Wilds. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The expansion will reintroduce the Master Rank difficulty, introduce new monsters, and feature a new region called the Celestial Islands.

Base game required for expansion

Players must own the base game, including the Switch 2 version, to access Ascendance. The base game is set to release on December 4, 2026. A free demo titled Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue is already available on the Nintendo eShop for players to try before the full release.

Design goals for Master Rank experience

During the Paris Games Week 2026, Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and director Takuro Hiraoka discussed the expansion's design. They emphasized that Ascendance aims to provide a Master Rank experience accessible to all players, regardless of how much time they spent on the base game. Players can initially use equipment from Wilds for early Master Rank quests, but more specialized gear will be needed as the game progresses.

Endgame content and player completion

The endgame content of Ascendance is designed to offer substantial challenges for dedicated players, with the freedom to repeat quests, improve weapon mastery, and craft rare equipment. The team also aims to ensure that players feel a sense of completion upon finishing the story.

Celestial Islands environment

The Celestial Islands, a new region in Ascendance, are set at a high altitude. Developers paid attention to the types of creatures that could inhabit such an environment, their behaviors, and how they interact with the surroundings. The environment is designed to feel credible, with detailed vegetation resembling high-altitude plant life.

New monster with group behavior

The expansion introduces the Araketa, a monster that exhibits more coordinated group behavior compared to the Doshaguma from Wilds. The Araketa has a leader that can direct the group, requiring players to adopt a different strategy. The team has not confirmed if other monsters will use similar mechanics but emphasized that each monster will have its own identity.

Return of Lao-Shan Lung with new design

Lao-Shan Lung, a notable monster from the series, will return with a redesigned encounter aimed at reducing repetition and improving player engagement. The team is reworking both its visual design and gameplay mechanics to provide a renewed experience.

New Ignifighter combat system

The Ignifighter system, a new combat mechanic, was adapted to different weapon categories. Lighter weapons such as the Sword + shield and Dual Blades were easier to integrate, while heavier weapons like the Great Sword and Hammer required careful balancing to maintain their unique identities. The system uses a gauge that must be filled to perform quick movements, ensuring these actions are not overused.

Challenges in monster development

When asked about the most challenging monster to develop, both Tsujimoto and Hiraoka laughed, noting that while some monsters were more difficult to create than others, they have no regrets about any of the creatures included in the series.
