Bridge repair project begins in November

A major construction project to repair the General-Leclerc Bridge in the Val de Saône has been announced by the Lyon Metropolitan Area. The definitive repair works will begin on November 12 and are expected to last until June 2027, with an estimated cost of 1.9 million euros.

Cracks discovered in bridge inspection

The project involves replacing a central part of the bridge, which was found to have cracks in the concrete at the cantilever span during an inspection in April of last year. A temporary repair was conducted over two weeks, with the bridge closed during that time, before sensors were installed to monitor its condition.

Traffic closures and pedestrian access

The chosen solution is to replace part of the central span with a new structure. There will be three periods of closure to motor vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use a pedestrian bridge installed on the downstream side, though it may be temporarily closed during the most complex crane operations.

Relocating infrastructure during repairs

Before removing the damaged part of the bridge, teams will have to relocate the numerous networks that currently cross the structure, including water, high-pressure gas, electricity, and telecommunications. Two temporary structures will be installed on either side of the bridge to accommodate these networks during the construction.

Bridge history and public meeting

Built in 1952, the General-Leclerc Bridge supports a daily traffic volume estimated at around 7,700 vehicles, including 300 heavy trucks, as well as 200 to 400 cyclists. A public meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or community hall, to present the construction project and its consequences to the residents.
