Bridge closure begins new phase

The Anne-de-Bretagne bridge in Nantes has been closed since October 26 for a new stage of its transformation. This closure allows work to begin on the 1975-built deck, which will be connected to a new structure.

Pedestrians and cyclists use new section

Since October 23, pedestrians and cyclists have been using the new part of the bridge, which opened three days earlier. A temporary cycle route is available in the north-south direction, while a secured road lane is used for south-north cycling.

Two decks coexisted briefly

During the weekend of October 24 and 25, both the old and new sections of the bridge were open. The old bridge was closed on October 26, and pedestrian and cyclist traffic moved to the new section.

Traffic changes near construction site

Near the construction site, special traffic arrangements are in place. On the François-Mitterrand quay, only pedestrians can move, while cyclists use an alternative route. The area is also a dead end for cars and deliveries.

Automobiles to return in late 2026

Automobile traffic on the Anne-de-Bretagne bridge has been stopped since April. A partial reopening is expected by the end of November 2026, with a temporary lane allowing travel from the island of Nantes toward the Fosse quay.

Full reopening planned for 2027

The bridge is expected to be fully reopened by the end of 2027, allowing two-way car traffic. This date is subject to construction delays and weather conditions. Updates on traffic and public transport changes are available on the Naolib construction website.

Historical bridge will be reshaped

The historic section of the bridge will be lowered by about 60 centimeters and its slope reduced from 6% to 4%, matching the new structure. This will prepare the bridge for the future tram lines 6 and 7.

Environmental benefits of preservation

The local authority decided to keep the 1975 bridge instead of demolishing it. This choice is expected to save 4,250 tons of concrete and 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions compared to a full replacement.

New structure will be wide and multifunctional

The new bridge will be 53 meters wide and include pedestrian areas, cycle paths, a road network, vegetation, and tram lines. The illustrated timeline from Nantes Métropole shows the opening of the viewing platform on October 23, with rail laying expected in the summer of 2027.
