Arte, the Franco-German public broadcasting channel, unveiled its 2026-2027 programming schedule on Thursday, September 3. The lineup includes several adaptations of literary works, transforming novels and narratives into audiovisual fiction for television and online streaming. The channel aims to offer a mix of international storytelling and cultural diversity through these new projects.
One of the highlights is the six-episode series The Life We Dreamed Of, adapted from Michelle Sacks’ novel You Were Made for This. The French translation of the book was published by Belfond editions. Directed by Audrey Estrougo, the series stars Clara Bretheau, Sandor Funtek, and Naïlia Harzoune. It is a co-production between ARTE France, Mandarin Television, and Scope Pictures, and will air on television and on arte.tv in 2027.
Another series, Anatomía de un instante, is based on Javier Cercas’ narrative and directed by Alberto Rodríguez. The series features Álvaro Morte and explores the turbulent years of Spain’s democratic transition. It is a co-production of ARTE France and Movistar Plus+, in collaboration with DLO Producciones, and will be broadcast in October.
The six-episode series Gone is inspired by the book To Hunt a Killer, co-written by detective Julie Mackay and Robert Murphy. Directed by Richard Laxton, the series features Eve Myles, David Morrissey, and Emma Appleton. It is produced by New Pictures and Observatory Picture and will be available on television and on arte.tv in 2027.
In addition to series, Arte will also release several films. Gerta and the Torn World is based on Katerina Tuckova’s novel The Exiles of Moravia, translated by Eurydice Antolin. The film explores the complexity of the mother-daughter relationship and will be available on arte.tv starting October 2, 2026, and on television from October 9, 2026. Impossible, an adaptation of Erri De Luca’s eponymous novel, will be available on arte.tv starting October 16, 2026, and on television from October 23, 2026. Lastly, The Man on the White Horse, a modern reinterpretation of Theodor Storm’s eponymous novel, will be available on arte.tv starting September 24, 2026, and on television starting September 25, 2026.
