Tavares sets new block record

Walter "Edy" Tavarès of Real Madrid surpassed Fran Vázquez to become the all-time leading block maker in Liga Endesa, achieving this during Real Madrid's 90-79 victory over San Pablo Burgos. Tavarès needed only two blocks to reach the milestone, which he completed in the first quarter of the game.

Tavares' journey to the record

Tavarès, a 2.21 m tall player from Cape Verde, began his Liga Endesa career in January 2013 with Gran Canaria at the age of 20. His journey to the record involved playing 408 matches and making at least one block in 321 of them, a rate of 78.7 percent.

Dominance in blocking

Since joining Real Madrid, Tavarès has been responsible for 42.5 percent of his team's blocks. Since November 12, 2017, he has made more blocks than twelve complete teams in the ACB, highlighting his significant impact on the game defensively.

Tavares' multiple-block records

Tavarès holds the records for the most matches with at least two (216), three (120), and four (55) blocks in Liga ACB. However, his personal best of eight blocks does not rank in the Top 10 of Liga Endesa, indicating a goal for future improvement.

Tavarès' continued dominance

At 34 years old, Tavarès shows no signs of slowing down. His recent performance has seen him average one block every 9 minutes and 24 seconds, an improvement of nearly two and a half minutes compared to his career average in the ACB. His current efficiency matches the level he achieved during his time in the NBA from 2017 to 2018.
