A Delaware woman was shot and killed by a hunter who allegedly mistook her for a deer, according to local authorities. Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 44, was killed when Walter Moorhead, 74, fired his rifle in a cornfield near Ellendale, Delaware. Moorhead has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless endangering. Manslaughter, under Delaware law, refers to the unintentional killing of another person due to reckless behavior. The charges could lead to a prison sentence of up to 25 years.
According to state police, the incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. when Moorhead, hunting from a ground blind, thought he saw a deer and fired. However, he had actually shot Chilel Soto. The incident took place in a field where Chilel Soto, her partner Minivaldo Velásquez, and two of her children were walking after dinner. Velásquez told WHYY that the shooting happened about an hour earlier than the police reported and that he applied pressure to her wound and called for help. Chilel Soto was taken to a hospital but later pronounced dead.
Velásquez described the killing as "senseless" and said Moorhead had "no excuse." He called it a "cold-blooded murder" and insisted it was not an accident. He also noted that he had never seen a deer with only two legs, adding that it "doesn't make sense." Authorities confirmed that hunting deer with a rifle was not in season at the time of the shooting. However, the property where Chilel Soto was killed had a permit allowing the harvest of antlerless deer outside the normal season.
Chilel Soto, a mother of five originally from Guatemala, was remembered by her family for her strength and love. Her sister, Yolin Chilel Soto, told WHYY that hunters should be sure they are targeting an animal before shooting and questioned whether there was a racial component to the incident. Yolin also suggested that Moorhead may need ongoing psychological help before handling a weapon. Moorhead, a resident of Salisbury, Maryland, has posted a $43,000 bond and waived a preliminary court hearing. Dozens of people gathered outside and inside the courthouse in support of Santos Maria Chilel Soto.
